ASP.NET is a web application framework developed and marketed by Microsoft that programmers can use to build dynamic web sites, web applications and web services. It was first released in January 2002 as part of Microsoft's .NET initiative and is the successor to Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) technology. ASP.NET is built on the Common Language Runtime (CLR), allowing programmers to write ASP.NET code using any supported .NET language. The framework is fully extensible and works with any data source. In addition, ASP.NET supports both Windows authentication and Forms authentication as well as provides support for custom authentication providers. ASP.NET also provides a number of built-in controls, such as validation controls, grid controls and navigation controls, that can be used to easily build rich websites and web applications.
